Connecting business systems begins with understanding how information should move between them. A useful integration solves a defined operational problem and gives the team a clear way to handle exceptions.
Describe the workflow first
Identify the starting event, the information required and the intended outcome. For example, a website enquiry might create a record in a customer-management system and notify the appropriate team.
Agree the source of information
Decide which system owns each record and who is responsible for its accuracy. Resolve conflicting information and duplicate records in the project plan, rather than leaving those decisions until launch.
Check dependencies before committing
Confirm the platforms involved, the access available, subscription requirements and any restrictions on integration. Document the information and decisions needed from each stakeholder.
Plan for exceptions
Define what should happen when information is incomplete, a connection is unavailable or an action cannot finish. Decide how the team will be notified and who will resolve the issue.
Test the business journey
Review realistic examples from beginning to end. Include both the expected process and common exceptions, then agree who will maintain the connection after launch.
